How it works

First you save their memories and their voice. Then anyone in the family can talk to them from their plaque.

  1. You save their memories and their voice.

From home: photos, stories and one to three minutes of their voice (WhatsApp voice notes or family videos). The person can also do it themselves, in their lifetime.

  2. We send you their QR plaque.

Made of stainless steel, for the headstone or niche, for the urn, or in a frame with their photo if their ashes were scattered. It sticks on in five minutes, with no drilling.

Talk to María. She’s an example.

Ask her about her biscuits or how she met her husband. She’ll answer in her voice.

María is a fictional example and her voice comes from a voice bank. Her answers are based on the memories we wrote for her. Her page is in Spanish, but you can write to her in English.

Why I started this

One day I went to visit my grandparents at the cemetery with my young daughter. Standing at their grave, I realised the memories were still there, but they were getting further away. I was forgetting their voices.

Then I looked at my daughter and thought about her grandparents, who are my parents. One day she won’t be able to ask them about something they lived through together, or hear their voices again. That’s why I created El Último Adiós.

You can also set it up while they’re alive

Record their stories and their voice together, taking your time. The person decides what is kept. One day, their children and grandchildren will be able to ask them things and hear the answer in their voice. The plaque is fitted when the time comes.

Common questions

Anything else? Email hola@elultimoadios.app and Manuel will answer.

What is it like to talk to them?

You scan the plaque with your phone’s camera and their page opens, with nothing to install. You write or speak to them, and they answer in their voice, based on the memories the family has saved: how they met, their recipes, the things they used to say. You can try it now with María, who is an example.

Is it really them? Is it ethical?

No, it isn’t them. An artificial intelligence answers in their voice, based on what the family has told it. It is designed to say “I don’t remember that” rather than make something up, but it can get things wrong, and the family can correct and add to their memories whenever they like. The voice is only created with signed permission, and any close relative can ask for it to be removed.

If someone writes to it in a moment of great distress, it gently encourages them to talk to someone they trust that same day, and to call 024 (Spain’s suicide prevention line, free, 24 hours a day) or 112 in an emergency.

What do we need to upload, and how much audio does it take?

Photos, their story and whatever you remember: anecdotes, recipes, the things they used to say, the people they loved. For the voice, one to three minutes of audio where they can be heard clearly is enough (a WhatsApp voice note will do). If there isn’t enough, we’ll tell you before we start.

How much is it, and what happens after the first year?

€249, including VAT and delivery. You pay once: the plaque, the memorial with no expiry date and a year of talking to them in their voice, counted from the day their voice is ready. After that, if you’d like to keep talking to them, it’s €9.99 a month. If not, the voice is paused and everything else stays. We never charge you anything without asking you first.

We’ll let you know before the year ends. It’s for family use: up to about 300 answers in their voice a month. Without the voice, “Memories only” costs €99.

Who can talk to them, and who can see the memorial?

The family decides. The memorial can be public, protected with a code you choose, or open by invitation only. Talking to them is reserved for the people the family invites. People outside the family can see their photos and their story, and leave a candle or a message.

Where does the QR code go?

On a headstone, niche or columbarium, a steel plaque of 8 × 8 cm. On an urn, a small self-adhesive plaque of 5 × 5 cm that fits even if the urn is curved. If you scattered their ashes, an A4 frame with their photo and a 6 × 6 cm plaque beside it, in black, natural wood or white. The price is the same in all three cases.

Who fits the plaque, and how long does it last?

You can do it yourself in five minutes: we post it to your home with outdoor adhesive, so there’s no drilling. If you’d rather have a professional, we’ll find a stonemason near you. Some cemeteries have rules about what can be added to a headstone; if you’re not sure, we’ll help you check.

It’s engraved stainless steel with no electronics, and it stands up to sun, rain and frost. If it ever stops scanning, we’ll replace it.

What if the company closes?

We would tell you months in advance and give you everything to download: their photos, their recordings and their texts. The plaque is yours to keep.

Any questions? I’ll answer them myself.

Tell me what you need and I’ll write back within two working days. I’m Manuel, and I reply personally.
